“I’m no longer interested in a European post”, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker told RTL Radio Lëtzebuerg on Saturday, dismissing media reports that he would seek to replace Herman Van Rompuy as EU Council President next year.
Juncker confirmed that, if his party were to win the next elections, he would remain in his post for the full five years of his electoral mandate. “And I am serious”, he insisted.
Juncker said that cooperating with the LSAP, his outgoing junior coalition partner, would become more “difficult” after the collapse of the governing coalition.
If the CSV were to be excluded from the next government, Juncker announced that he would take a seat on the opposition benches. “That’s not a shame”, he said.
