Luxembourg awaits Grand Duke’s decision on early elections

Luxembourg is on course for early elections in October after a meeting between Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and Grand Duke Henri on Friday. Juncker asked the Grand Duke to call elections eight months ahead of schedule, following an intense debate in Parliament on Wednesday about the conduct of the Luxembourg Secret Service. A statement from the royal palace on Thursday said that Grand Duke Henri would now “take time to reflect and hold consultations”.

Under Luxembourg’s constitution, the Grand Duke has the power to dissolve parliament. In that case, an election must be held within three months.

A Finance Ministry source told AFP that parliament would continue work until 8 October with elections on 20 October.

In the meantime, the government will also continue to meet as usual each week, with a spokesperson for the Prime Minister telling the Wall Street Journal Europe that Luxembourg would have a “functioning government right up to” the elections.
